and movement, but the very fact that they can speak captures our attention in a way that few other birds can do.
Parrot's ability to talk or mimic is related to their gregarious nature. Parrots have
a long life span and are very social. In the wild, parrot chicks learn to mimic
vocalizations specific to their parents. As they play or work together, these parrots
repeat vocalizations to each other, which helps keep bonds strong.

How to Select a Great Talking Bird
When choosing a parrot, realize that there is a chance your bird will never talk.
Choosing a young male will give you the best opportunity of having a talking bird
as they are generally the most talkative. Teaching a parrot to talk takes patience
but is well worth the effort. Parrots are individuals, each with different talents and
interests. The only way that you can be guaranteed of getting a talking parrot is by
purchasing an already trained one. Talking ability should be one of the lesser
reasons to purchase a pet bird. Close to 95% of pet birds purchased in the United
States are given up in the first two years primarily because the bird doesn't live up
to unrealistic expectations. Be realistic about what your bird can learn and conduct
research on your species.
There are many breeders who are hand-feeding the popular species and you may
be fortunate enough to be find a baby parrot that has already learned a few words.
If you can obtain a domestic-bred bird already attempting to mimic speech, you
have a great candidate for talk training. When selecting a parrot, the most
important criteria are good health. It is advised that you get a qualified veterinarian
to give your bird a clean bill of health before your final purchase. Another
important criterion is the age of the bird. In general, the younger the bird, the
better. Although parrots have adaptable brains and can keep learning throughout
their lives, they are much more likely to be open to language learning if they have
received exposure to it from the beginning.
Parrots should be appreciated for their amazing beauty, intelligence, and soaring
spirit. Even if parrots don't learn to speak as humans speak, they can and will
communicate with their owners in their own special way. A talking parrot is an
added bonus but not the focus of owning one of these beautiful creatures.
Remember that certain species are considered better talkers than others. Among
the larger parrots, the African Grey parrot is considered one of the best, followed
by Amazons. Cockatoos can also learn to talk, but unlike Macaws, they tend to
have sweet voices.
